Teenagers and Driving: Should I Let My Teen Drive My Car?

Your teen getting his or her driver’s license can be scary for most parents. It can be the first sign of your child growing up and sending him or her away in a car alone is nerve wracking enough. Whether or not you should let your teen drive your car should be a decision that is well thought and you should have a sit down conversation with your teen beforehand. Some rules should be laid out such as when you want your teen back with your car and who he or she should have in it. You may even want your teen to be driving a while before you decide you can let your car go with your teen.

You should also make it clear to your teen the importance of keeping your car clean and if you find it that he or she is not taking car of it while driving it around town then you can take the driving privileges away. It is not harmful to let him or her drive your car as long as it is taken care of. If you feel uneasy about it you can always do a written agreement between the two of you and if it is not followed then he or she will have to pay for their own car. Your teen should be working for their own car as well but in the meantime you can let him or her borrow your car along with repercussions if it is not taken care of. You must also make sure the car insurance has your teen covered in case of an accident. If the teen shows responsibility such as getting a job after school to save up for their own car then chances are you won’t lend your car much longer.
